Little more than frame and fenders remain of this long-forgotten car. In the background on the west slope of Bodie Bluff is the Standard Mill. To the right of the mill and out of frame is the superintendant's residence, which was home to Theodore Hoover, brother of President Herbert Hoover.
The original 20-stamp mill built in 1877 was destroyed by fire on October 4, 1898. Reconstruction began as soon as the debris could be cleared, and the new mill began operating on February 9, 1899. Considering the bitterly fierce winters at Bodie's altitude of more than 8,300 feet, erecting such a structure in just four months was an astounding feat.
